It is the mission of the Oak Island Police Department
K-9 division to work with local, state and federal
agencies in taking a proactive approach in
safeguarding our community from illegal drugs, finding
lost or missing persons and tracking criminals. The
unit will thrive to maintain the utmost professionalism in
dealing with these task.

The police service dog takes approximately 8 month to train,
- tracking missing or lost persons
- narcotic detection and indication
- agility
- basic and advanced techniques
- patrol functions

K-9 TRAINING
The canine unit currently has two Labrador Retrievers , Oreo
and Buck. The most common breeds of police service dogs
are Belgium Malinois and the German Shepherd, however
Labrador retrievers have become increasingly popular
throughout the years. US CUSTOMS and Border Protection
use Labradors as do many state federal and municipal
agencies. Labradors can be linked back as far as the late
1800's as being reliable police service dogs.
COMBAT TRACKER TEAMS of the Vietnam War,
were small, highly-trained units usually consisting of
five men and a Labrador Retriever.
Our canine teams are trained and certified to assure court
recognition of evidence presented on behalf of the canine.
